Days out in Harlow

Harlow is itself historically significant, as one of the original New Towns to be constructed in the South of England following the Second World War, but the surrounding countryside of Essex and Hertfordshire has been a popular destination for getaways and family holidays for centuries. There's plenty to keep visitors of all ages entertained on breaks in Harlow.

Many people who visit Harlow are understandably keen to see some of the town's historical monuments, and an impressive 13 certified ancient monuments are located within its limits - including a significant Roman Temple that has been the site of many important archaeological discoveries. The Museum of Harlow collects artefacts from throughout the town's history, and is itself a listed building, one of many designated conservation areas that also includes Mark Hall North.

You don't have to spend all your time visiting old buildings either, with many well maintained outdoor areas such as Harlow Town Park and Parndon Wood Nature Reserve being ideal starting points for adventures further afield in the surrounding countryside.

Whether you're arriving by car or making use of local transport, you can find many exciting and awe-inspiring attractions just a few miles from Harlow. If you're travelling with the kids in tow, they could enjoy spending the day at the Wild n Wacky indoor play area, which also features an air conditioned café to keep parents occupied and free customer parking. More energetic activities await at Adventure Island Play Barn in Sawbridgeworth, suitable for children under five, while older children and teenagers can enjoy the thrill of go kart racing at Rye House Kart Raceway in nearby Hoddesdon - one of the few go kart circuits in Britain to feature karts specially designed for younger children.

If you're hoping to get closer to nature and spend time in the majestic English countryside during your trip to Harlow, RSPB Rye Meads Nature Reserve is just a few miles away and offers the chance to glimpse local wildlife, as well as featuring activities for children. You'll also have the chance to explore authentic country manors when visiting locations such as Rye House Gatehouse and The Henry Moore Foundation, the latter of which is housed in a luxurious 70-acre estate.

In the town itself, you won't have to go too far from your Harlow hotel to find all the amenities and entertainments you'd expect in a modern community, from theatres to shopping arcades.
