Traditionally from India, Bangladesh and neighbouring nations, the humble curry has become a British institution, just as popular as shepherds pie or the long-established Sunday roast. So much so, there are annual grammy-esque awards held in honour of this newly national dish, awarding the best of the best curry houses in the UK. If you are seeking out the best curry in Britain, take a hint from the 2011 winners and add these destinations to your curry trail itinerary.



Taj Tandoori, Prestwick: Best in Scotland
Established in 1981, Taj Tandoori in Prestwick, Ayreshire are renowned for classic Indian cooking. In a comfortable, no-fuss setting, this family-run, local hot-spot is a must visit, serving authentic dishes perfect for gathering with friends, ordering a large selection and everyone tucking in.

Bokhara Brasserie, Bridgend: Best in Wales
This is not the first time Bokhara have been presented the Best Curry House in Wales award. Bokhara means ‘warm oven’ which describes nicely the warm service, atmosphere and authentic homemade food you can expect at this establishment. Combining fresh ingredients with Indian spices or Mediterranean herbs, Bokhara know exactly what they are doing. The open kitchen, where you can watch the expert chefs making your fresh naan bread and creating the heavenly spiced dishes you are about to devour adds to the atmosphere and experience of this excellent curry house.

Rilys, Redditch: Best in Midlands
Rilys in Redditch is the flagship restaurant of the Rilys Group with two other excellent restaurants in Evesham and Bromsgrove. Rilys in Redditch is simple and stylish and they serve flavours of eastern Asia with a western approach, including the new healthy choice menu.

Haweli in Twyford and the Spice Lodge in Cheltenham were both honoured with the Best Curry House award in the South East and South West respectively.

Vujon, Newcastle: Best in North East
Located in Newcastle’s stylish Quayside area, Vujon serves traditional but gourmet Indian food with a contemporary edge. With a menu packed with wonderful combinations, such as the Shahi Murgh Pasanda, chicken stuffed with chicken mince, pistachio nuts, raisins, simmered cardamon-scented almond and yoghurt gravy, the menu alone will have you salivating. This elegant curry house is sleek and sumptuous, perfect for a romantic night out or a quiet evening with a few friends.

The Best Curry House in the North West award was bestowed upon Dower House, in Doncaster, a charming, family run Indian restaurant serving all of the favourites to the highest of standards.

Tamarind, Mayfair: Best in Central London
Voted the best curry house in central London, all London curry lovers know Tamarind and applaud its ‘nouvelle Indian’ fare. No stranger to industry awards, this posh and pretty Mayfair icon serves delicately flavoured dishes derived from traditional Moghul cuisine, presented with extreme sophistication. Another of London’s favourite curry houses, Shampan 3 in Welling took out the Best Curry House in London’s Suburbs award.

A new award for the prestigious Britain Curry Awards, the Culinary Chef of the Year was taken out by Khalid Sami Khan of Birmingham’s famous Lasan restaurant. Lasan, and fellow Curry Award recipient, Itihaas, both located in the famous Balti Triangle, have attributed to Birmingham’s rise as the unofficial curry capital of the UK. If you don’t have time to visit all the award-winning curry houses in Britain, but are after a legendary curry, then check out London to Birmingham trains and head off for a long weekend of dining in the Balti Triangle.
