Egypt is a country steeped in history and charm. From the bustling streets of its capital Cairo to the more laid back coastal resort of Sharm El Sheikh, it offers visitors fantastic sights, weather and atmosphere. As such, Egyptian holidays are particularly popular with visitors looking for sunshine, culture and beaches all rolled in to one.

You’ll be spoilt for choice when trying to find a suitable destination in Egypt, however some of the top picks for 2012 include Luxor, Sharm El Sheikh and Taba.

All three resorts are located in upper Egypt, which is perfect for year-round holidays. In fact, many people choose to visit during the winter months when the weather is still guaranteed to be pleasant and sightseeing is much easier than during the hot summer.

Often referred to as the 'world’s greatest open air museum', Luxor is made up of three different areas - the main city of Luxor, the town of Karnak and the ancient city of Thebes. Luxor is a hugely popular holiday resort, and the rich history of Egypt is showcased in its numerous museums and monuments, with the Temple of Luxor, the El-Mekashkesh Mosque and the Valley of the Kings being of particular interest to those after the chance to take in some of Egypt's most stunning architecture.

Sharm El Sheikh is Egypt’s most popular resort. It’s also the most cosmopolitan, and its coastline is filled with modern restaurants, shops and hotels. Visitors can spend their holiday soaking up the rays on the white sandy beaches before indulging in some luxury spending in the resort’s shopping malls and boutiques.

This lively resort also offers lots of activities for the adventurous holidaymaker including windsurfing, camel riding and breathtaking diving experiences.

Taba is the most northern resort you can choose for a Red Sea holiday, and is located right at the top of the Gulf of Aqaba. Known as the gateway to the picturesque area of Sinai, it lies on the border of neighbouring Israel.

Taba is a much newer and therefore less developed resort than Luxor and Sharm El Sheikh, but is still perfect for a holiday. It’s ideal for those wanting to get lost in the history of Egypt whilst also enjoying beautiful coastline backed by scenic mountains. Taba is known for its fantastic marine life, particularly in Taba Heights where the clear, sheltered water makes the array of exotic creatures easily visible.
