Attractions near Thurrock

Thurrock occupies an enviable location between the countryside of Essex and the urban bustle of London, and is a popular residential choice for commuters. There's much to occupy visitors to this town too, from local entertainment and retail centres such as Lakeside Shopping Centre to the many areas of outstanding natural beauty located in the surrounding area.

Thurrock's history stretches back to prehistoric times, with archaeological excavations uncovering Mammoth remains as well as later artefacts from the Roman and Anglo Saxon times, particularly at sites such as Mucking. Subsequent centuries saw the establishment of an 11th century mint and 15th century wool market around the area of Horndon-on-the-Hill, and the establishment of the Tilbury blockhouse would prove to be a pivotal defensive measure to protect London from invasions during the Tudor period.

This fort can still be visited today, acclaimed as the finest example of 17th century military engineering that was used until as recently as the Second World War, and those interested in Thurrock's military heritage can also visit the Victorian Coalhouse Fort further along the banks of the Thames. The Thurrock Museum and Gallery is another recommended destination for history enthusiasts, which features 40 permanent exhibits in addition to 20 temporary ones and collects a total of more than 1,500 artefacts from throughout the ages.

If you're more drawn to the great outdoors during your Thurrock break though, public spaces such as Grays Beach Riverside Park can be ideal for families or romantic escapes. Kids will be kept active and entertained by the adventure trails, aerial slide and other activities, while couples can enjoy romantic riverside walks all summer long. The Grangewater Outdoor Education Centre is another popular destination for outdoor activities, with a schedule of activities designed to appeal to younger visitors as well as adults, or you may prefer to head to the wide open spaces of Chafford Gorges Nature Park, Grove House Wood and Langdon Hills Country Park, just a short distance from Thurrock.

If you're only visiting Thurrock for a short time, or prefer not to stray too far from your Thurrock hotel, you can also find lots to see and do within the town itself. This includes multiplex cinemas, theatres and the well-known Arena Essex motor sports complex, which can be found next to the Lakeside Shopping Centre and is a popular site for stock car racing and other events throughout the year.
