The Atkins diet gained much popularity and caused much controversy in late 1990. The theory proposed by Dr. Atkins is that the main source of energy for the body comes from carbohydrates. Reducing the intake of carbohydrates, the body must find another energy source and in this case the body burns fat, your accumulated fat, this process is known as ketosis. Dr. Atkins also states that carbohydrates promote insulin production and it would be responsible for converting excess carbohydrates into fat.
What is the amount of carbohydrates ingested a normal diet?
Normal levels of carbohydrates in a normal diet is approximately 200 grams per day
The program of the Atkins diet has four phases:
Induction
Lasts around two weeks and aims to force the body to enter into the process ketosis quickly, limiting carbohydrate intake to 20 grams per day. That stage is where there is the highest weight loss (3-4 kg). During this phase are allowed to eat meats, cheeses and other products high in fat while only the vegetables with low carbohydrate content are allowed, such as broccoli, tomatoes and lettuce still limited to three small servings a day.
Ongoing Weight Loss
In this phase, carbohydrate intake can be increased by five grams per day and lasts until the weight is around 5 kg higher than desirable. The goal of this phase is to determine the maximum amount of carbohydrates that causes you to lose weight.
Pre Maintenance
Carbohydrate intake is increased until it determines the amount that causes a person does not gain weight.
Maintenance
Stage that encourages one to maintain the eating habits of the previous phases and lasts for life with the possibility of returning to previous stages if necessary.
Remember that before start any diet you must contact your doctor and have its opinion about what diet is better for you. If you have high cholesterol this diet may not be the best one for you. Keep in mind that fast weight loss is dangerous and can cause collateral effects in your health.
