Cost-Cutting Tips for TV Viewers

Many people cannot live without a television as it is an excellent source of entertainment and useful information. Some have even formed a habit of watching TV for several hours. This habit can be time, energy, and money drains. There are households that spend thousands monthly on high electric bills and cable subscription costs. However, this does not have to be the case anymore. The most basic cost-cutting method is to turn off the TV when it is not being used. ‘Turn off’ does not simply refer to pushing the power switch—the plug should be pulled out from the socket as well. Putting the TV on standby is inefficient and impractical, because it still consumes energy even if it is not turned on. This should also be done for all appliances in the house to reduce the electricity bill significantly. The volume and the lighting are major contributors to the TV’s overall energy consumption. Keeping the volume low and dimming the back light at bit helps viewers save up on TV expenses. This has health benefits as well. Hearing problems and eye strain can be minimized and even prevented. Watching TV shows on the Internet also saves energy and money. Studies show that the average colored television consumes 0.3 kWh per hour, while the average computer and screen only consumes 0.09 kWh. Cable boxes also use more energy than a refrigerator, so it is more practical to watch TV shows online free instead of subscribing to a cable service. In addition to the expense cuts, the Internet has even more program varieties than a regular cable subscription. There is no longer a need to shell out hundreds monthly to view special access shows because anyone can watch TV shows online free. Internet users can select only what they want to see, unlike cable subscribers who have to pay for channels that they do not even watch. Another advantage of watching TV online is the opportunity to repeat episodes. One can go back to his or her favorite episodes anytime. Buying DVD copies to catch missed chapters is also a thing of the past, since it is already possible to watch TV shows online free. The allotted money for this can now be spent on more important things.
