This pet health care information is from an article in one of my professional journals. It is important for owner compliance in any diet recommendations by your veterinarian. The old "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink" really holds true. One help in starting the diet program is to get a measuring cup. If you know how much you feed your dog or cat including those snacks, figure starting with 80% of the caloric content of that. The "snacks" now should be the dog food recommended whether a prescription food or just reduction (prescription food better). Give a kibble of that food rather than table goodies. You can figure 10% of the caloric intake for those healthy snacks. Be consistent and don't go back to the feeding habits of old even after the weight loss. Do not feed free choice to a dog or cat that has already proven to be a little bit of a "pig". Measure the food and divide it up into 2-3 meals for the day.
