Pet Care Advice: Not All Dogs Can Swim

An extremely important piece of pet care advice is to be really careful with your dog around water. Whether a pool, the ocean or lake, some dogs like most retrievers and pointers love the water and want to get in a swim. Others like Mastiffs, Rottweilers, English Bulldogs to only mention a few, have very heavy bodies and are more likely to sink rather than swim (especially the bull dogs). Do not leave them unattended near swimming pools and watch them carefully around all bodies of water.
Especially dogs with long backs, often heavy bodies relative to their legs, and epecially short legged breed types tend to not float naturally and must really work hard just to keep afloat, let alone have a nice swim. These body types must never be left alone in the back yard where there is a swimming pool. This is true also with any geriatric dogs and especially ones with cataracts or other sight deficiencies. I have had owners bring in English Bulldogs that fell in a swimming pool and literally sank to the bottom. And far too many drowned pets brought in after owners "just left them out for a while when they went shopping...Older pets often just stray too close to the edge and walk right in. They are too weak to keep afloat and swimm to find the steps and certainly aren't strong enough to just pull themselves out at the edge of the pool
Prevent dog health care emergencies. Love your pet.
The more knowledgeable you are, the better able you will be to be active in the pet preventative health care plan for your dog or cat.
