When the grout between bathroom tiles gets worn and discolored, there are many products available that make this an easy job that anyone can do. Instructions on how to clean grout is widely available, both online and at the public library.

Grout is usually made by mixing water, sand, and cement, which is pressed into joints between tiles and allowed to dry. Sometimes grout has a coloring pigment mixed in. A rubber or plastic tool called a float is used for applying the grout into the crack between tiles smoothly and evenly. Epoxy grout is preferred for surfaces exposed to grease and acid, in spite of it's higher price. Available either sanded or unsanded, the stain resistance and durability of epoxy grout make it the best choice for heavy traffic areas such as kitchen counters.

Grout Sealer is a solvent or water based compound that is applied over dried grout, making it waterproof and resistant to acid and oil contaminants. Grout sealing on existing grout should be done every year or two. On a new grouting job, two days will allow the grout to completely settle before applying sealer. Penetrating sealer soaks into every nook and cranny in the pores of the grout, leaving them completerly covered when it dries. Membrane sealer are mainly used to add a glossy color to grout while resisting water, and can only be used on unglazed tile.

In any part of the house, grout has a way of attracting dirt and must be kept clean. In the bathroom it's mold and mildew, and in the kitchen it can be food stains plus mildew and household traffic that dirties grout. Products offered by Grout Paints are a great help for making grout cleaning a lot easier, just with a simple application kit.
