The Facts about Periodontal Disease Explained by Bucktown Family Dentist

When bacteria in your mouth goes unchecked; it builds up around your teeth at the gum line which causes an infection of your gum tissue which can eventually lead to periodontal disease. The primary factor leading to gum disease is the absence of proper dental hygiene. Other contributing factors are:

Tobacco use: Smoking and tobacco use are the most significant factors in the progression and development of gum disease.

Chronic stress and poor diet: Stress and/or poor diet habits both lower the ability of your immune system to fight infection, leaving you vulnerable to gum disease.

Pregnancy and menopause: Hormonal changes that a woman goes through during pregnancy and menopause increases their gums’ sensitivity, potentially leading to gum disease.

Medications: Oral contraceptives, anti-depressants, steroids, and heart medications can inadvertently make gums susceptible to periodontal disease.

Diabetes and other medical issues: Diabetes, heart disease, respiratory diseases, and osteoporosis can all intensify the progression of gum disease.
