Massages are procedures popularly known for de-stressing and relaxing tired and frazzled nerves from the stress of everyday living. These types of massages are commonly offered by spas and recreational centers and focus mainly on providing a soothing and relaxing experience for clients. Aside from being a great way to pamper oneself, massages are also an effective means of treating some common physiologic ailments. Such practice is known as therapeutic massage.

Therapeutic massage goes beyond the conventional form of spa-based massages and applies soft tissue manipulation to promote wellness and alleviate body pains resulting from musculoskeletal trauma. It is also known to aid in treating some common diseases and facilitate relaxation and stress-reduction. It is part of a range of alternative medical treatments known as manipulative and body-based practices; these are therapeutic techniques which involve gentle manipulation of different parts of the body, using the hands or a special device.

Therapeutic massage is known to help treat fatigue, fibromyalgia, chronic anxiety, hypertension, muscle cramps, and various body pains. It may be applied to various parts of the body and require the use of different techniques to address ailments of particular body parts. Listed below are forms of therapeutic massage and the like.

An Esalen massage is one of the commonly practiced forms of massage therapy. It is a form of Swedish massage which aims to address both the body and mind through drawing attention to the body's energy exchange and mental health. An Esalen massage provides a holistic therapeutic experience that soothes both the mind and body, keeping them in tune with each other. Such practices give clients a sense of calm and serenity. San Jose massage therapists receive special training to effectively provide a calming experience for their clients.

The Trager approach is another form of manipulative and body-based practice similar to therapeutic massage. It involves gently rocking the body to facilitate harmony of its different parts, specifically the muscles and nerves. Like the Esalen massage, the Trager approach aims to tune the mind in with the body and enable the client to reach a state of calm and relaxation. Such procedures are performed by skilled San Jose massage therapists. The Trager approach is known to treat health conditions such as stress, depression, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, muscle spasms, and many others.

Chiropractic therapy involves the manipulation of subluxations in the spine to relieve pain. A San Jose chiropractor would manipulate the spinal structure to locate subluxations in the vertebrae and realign them to alleviate neck and back pain. This corrects nerve function and improves the activity of all tissues and cells.
