When my patients come into my office and ask me what mouthwash to use to help their bad breath, I tell them that none of them will truly help. Mouthwash is just a temporary mask and should not be considered a solution for their bad breath. In fact, most mouthwashes that smell the freshest end up having the most alcohol content. This can cause even more bad breath by drying out the mouth.
Bad breath or chronic halitosis is something that millions of people suffer from. For the majority of these people it originates from their gums and tongue, but sometimes it may be caused by digestive or other medical conditions. The odor is caused by poor oral hygiene, bacteria in the mouth, the decay of food particles, and other debris in your mouth.
The only way to truly get rid of bad breath is to find the cause. You should start by having a diligent routine of proper oral care to eliminate of all the hidden bacteria multiplying between your teeth. That bacterium is also a breeding ground for both infection and periodontal disease. The team here at Provo Dental Care can show you how to maintain proper at-home oral hygiene. Here are a few tips:
● Brush for at least three minutes. There is a lot of area to cover and the best way to brush is to clean every reachable surface of every tooth.
● Floss carefully around every tooth. Make sure to pull the floss down into the space at the gumline on both sides.
● Don’t forget to brush your gums, sides of your mouth, tongue and palate. You may also want to use a tongue scraper to eliminate bacteria and food particles off of your tongue.
Kick-start your new oral hygiene program by scheduling a cleaning here at our office. We will be more than happy to give you more tips on brushing as well as which dental products may be the most effective for you.
