When do wisdom teeth erupt?

Some people never get their wisdom teeth, but many others with have anywhere from on to four. Wisdom teeth are sometimes called third molars and they are located in the very back of the mouth. They are the last teeth to erupt from the gums; they typically do so between the ages of 17 and 25. Often there is not enough space in the mouth to allow the wisdom teeth to erupt properly, which results in impacted teeth. If left untreated, impacted wisdom teeth can lead to a number of serious and potentially dangerous problems.

What kind of problems can wisdom teeth create?

While not all wisdom teeth need to be removed, Niskayuna dentist performs extractions when an active problem uh as pain, swelling, decay or infection exists. Serious problems that can occur in the future are:

Infection: Bacteria and food may become trapped under the gum tissue which causes infections. These infections may be painful and dangerous.

Damage to nearby teeth: Second molars (the teeth in front of the wisdom teeth) can be damaged by impacted wisdom teeth, which results in tooth decay and even gum disease

Tooth Crowding: Impacted wisdom teeth can put too much pressure on surrounding teeth and actually move them and cause them to be misaligned, crowded or twisted.

Disease: Cysts or tumors can occasionally occur in the areas surrounding the impacted wisdom teeth.

How can I tell if my wisdom teeth are a problem?

Early detection, evaluation and treatment in the mid-teen years is highly recommended in order to identify potential problems and improve results for patients needing wisdom teeth extraction. At Niskayuna Dental we can provide a thorough examination and suggest the best treatment plans and options for your individual case.
