Mushrooms as Antioxidants: Helping the Body Fight Free Radicals

Many types of diseases have been caused by free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that are formed when the weak bonds between molecules are split. They are supposed to help the body with its natural functions, particularly in digestion and other metabolic processes. However, when there are too many free radicals in the body, the body may act negatively.  According to studies, free radicals are responsible for tissue damage, aging, and formation of diseases. Free radicals can be considered toxins in the body, causing deterioration of the human health.

 

Free radicals are considered dangerous to cells. When molecules oxidize, they become highly reactive, becoming detriments to human health—they attack healthy cells, causing poor health. Although oxidation is a natural process inside the body, too much oxidation of cells can be harmful. If this is not controlled, free radicals may spread in the body and cause different fatal diseases like cancers.

 

There are many factors that cause the overproduction of free radicals such as unhealthy lifestyle and stress. Food types that are rich in fat and cholesterol are major causes of free radicals. Although cholesterol is not mainly the cause of free radical production, the oxidation of cholesterol is what triggers it. Artificial substances mixed with food such as preservatives and pesticides can also trigger overproduction. Stress, smoking, and alcohol are also primary causes of free radicals. 

 

Antioxidants are what the body needs to fight off these toxins. Antioxidants are present in organic food such as fruit and vegetables. Mushrooms, being considered as wonder food, are also good sources of antioxidants. This is considered one of the medicinal uses of mushrooms —fighting free radicals with their large supply of antioxidants.                  

 

Antioxidants help prevent free radicals from multiplying and spreading throughout the body. They prevent oxidation from occurring, so the production of free radicals is hindered. Since it was found as one of the medicinal uses of mushrooms, experts started using mushrooms as ingredients in different medicinal products. Nutrition experts also encourage patients to include mushrooms in their diet to protect their bodies from the harmful effects of free radicals.                    

 

Some would even manufacture medicines and supplements made of mushrooms so that people can have their daily doses of antioxidants. Those who are suffering from different diseases and have tried taking mushroom supplements for a time are proud to say that they felt an improvement in their bodies. Thanks to the medicinal uses of mushrooms, people now have hope of being cured from fatal ailments.
