Brushing and Flossing Tips Shared by Bucktown Family Dentist
Your smile is the first thing someone notices about you and therefore one of your most important assets. Cosmetic dentistry can transform your smile, but a proper at-home oral hygiene routine will guarantee that you not only have a beautiful smile, but a healthy mouth as well.
Brushing
1. Brush at least twice a day, in the morning and before bed.
2. While brushing, place the brush at a 45 degree angle right where your gums and teeth meet.
3. Gently brush gum line and teeth by using small circular motions.
4. By applying too much pressure you may damage gums and tooth enamel, so be careful.
5. Pay extra attention to the surfaces of the back teeth, make sure you brush every surface of every tooth, cheek-side, chewing surfaces and tongue-side.
6. To brush the chewing surfaces, use back and forth strokes.
7. Don’t forget to brush the tongue to remove fungi, food and debris.
Flossing
Flossing is an extremely effective way to remove plaque from between your teeth. The flavor and type of floss does not matter, so you can choose whichever you please.
1. Cut a piece of floss about 18” long
2. Wrap the ends of the floss around each of your middle fingers until your hands are 2-3 inches apart.
3. Move the floss gently between the teeth toward the gum line.
4. Curve the floss in a U-shape around each of your teeth, carefully sliding it beneath the gum line.
5. Slowly move the floss up and down several times in between each tooth to remove inter-dental plaque and debris.
