Family Meal Time: Strengthening Bonds

The family is the best support system one could have. The love of each family member gives an individual the strength to face life’s toughest challenges. Knowing that he has a family who will understand and accept him no matter what provides a sense of security that enables him to look at things from a better perspective.

Strong family relationships make responsible individuals. Children are taught sound values at an early age, which they carry over to adulthood. Parents instill these lessons in their children through constant communication and good examples. Constant family bonding is also another way to teach values to children.

Family bonding doesn’t have to be extravagant. Parents do not need to spend much for a grand vacation or a week-long getaway just to spend quality family time. Indoor activities like playing a board game and sharing a delicious meal are already great ways to bond with loved ones.

Dining together is said to strengthen family ties. A meal encourages conversation, so every member of the family can keep tabs on one another’s life over dinner. Kids share what happened during their days and parents offer sound advice regarding certain issues. This does not always have to happen in a sit-down dinner setting. For example, families can also bond over a campagnolo pizza while playing board games in the living room. This fosters a more relaxed atmosphere than usual.

The adolescent years are crucial. This is the period when teens are more likely to hide their issues and feelings from their parents, even if they desperately want the latter’s advice. To help them open up, parents can prepare their children’s favorite food, such as chocolate-dipped goodies or gourmet sandwich recipes. Good food is always a nice precursor to good conversation. This also reminds teens that their parents are there for them.

Bonding moments such as these create memories that kids will cherish even if they have already grown up. The memory of how the family celebrated dad’s promotion with a delicious Italian salami dish or how they had an ice cream party to help one sister through a tough break-up will encourage them to build similar moments with their own families in the future.
