In mathematics, ‘x’ and ‘y’ are usually considered as variables. Variable contains a value that changes along with the problem. For example: - y = 3x – 5 m = 6n + 7 A variable is of two types, Independent and dependent variables or Dependent and Independent variables Independent variables: Independent variable is a variable in the equation that is not dependent on any other variable. Its value can be chosen randomly. An independent variable’s value can be changed in an equation. It is also known as the input of the equation. An independent variable can take up any value. It has no restriction imposed on it. Dependent variables: Dependent variable is a variable in the equation that is totally dependent on the other variable in the equation. Its value can be determined by substituting the value or values of the independent variables. A dependent variable’s value can be determined cannot be changed in the equation unless the value of the independent variable is changed. It cannot take up any random value due to the restriction imposed on it due to the Independent variable. Examples of Independent and Dependent Variables: 1. y = 7x - 5 In the above example, x is the independent variable and y is the dependent variable, 7 is the coefficient of x and -5 is the constant. He value of ‘y depends on the value of ‘x’. We can put different values of ‘x’ in the equation and can find out the corresponding values of y. Hence we can say, when x = 1, y = 2 X = 2, y = 9 X=3, y = 15 2. z = 3x^2 – 6 In above example, x is the independent variable and z is the dependent variable, 3 is the coefficient of x and -6 is the constant. Identifying Independent and Dependent Variables: Variables can be identified by looking at their dependency, if the variable is not dependent on anything then is the independent variable and if it is dependent on the value of the independent variable then it is the dependent variable.
