Site Investigations – Meeting Environmental Regulations for Your Projects

(Abbey smith). Submitted on Thu, 2 Feb 2012

Before you start any new business projects you need to make sure you have assessed the environmental impact.  This is an important issue and site investigation assessments can help you understand your responsibilities.  Failure to consider environmental impact in the early stages of your project could lead to serious delays and costs later on.

Commercial and Residential Developments

Building large projects such as new business and industrial estates, commercial premises and residential housing developments will always have a significant impact on the environment.

You need to make sure you have carried out thorough environmental site investigation assessments before the project begins.

Not only will this assist you with planning consent but it will also identify any areas in which your project could be improved in terms of reducing the impact on the environment.

Construction projects can result in the emission of fugitive dust.  Site investigation assessments can also monitoring dust emissions during key stages of the project such as demolition and construction.

Industrial Processing Plants

Industrial processing plants can impact heavily on the environment.  Waste disposal and air quality can both be problematic with these types of business projects.

Thorough site investigation assessments will need to be carried out on a range of pollutant issues.

These assessments can ensure that plants are meeting regulations and guidelines regarding emissions (including common pollutants such as NOx, ammonia and SO2).

Air quality modelling can offer solutions for the dispersal and reduction of emissions.
Site Investigation

Site investigation will involve a number of stages.  An initial risk assessment is required under the Environmental Protection Act (EPA).  This will identify any potential risks that may arise during the project from dealing with contaminated land through to the risks arising from the geographical location (land slippage, flooding etc.).

Phased site investigation will begin with a desk study looking into the history of the site.

This will then provide evidence that can be examined at the next stage to be carried out on Site.

Onsite investigation includes various techniques such as soil and water chemical analysis, walkover surveys, exploratory holes (to check ground subsurface structure and existing obstructions).
