Everyone loves photos that tell a story. The world’s most amazing photographs easily convey a message or tell a powerful story. Aside from composition and technical settings, capturing the “moment” that tells the story separates a good picture from an amazing one. That is why a lot of portraits are very good pictures.
Portraits are very powerful because the subjects, either posing or candid, have to appear very natural and effortless. Two examples of portraiture with usually great results are maternity and child portraits—the former because pregnancy often delivers powerful messages of new life to the world; the latter because taking pictures of children often bring candidness and fun to the story that photos tell.
Regardless of the type of portrait to be shot, there are basic tips that can be used to improve them. Composition is important, so make sure to frame photos in a way that compliments the subject. A photographer’s knowledge of manual settings will help a lot in taking more creative shots with the camera. Taking advantage of good light, usually just after sunrise or before sunset, or using flash, can really create photos that give impact.
Maternity portraits are usually best kept simple. Distracting elements should be removed before taking the shot, since the emphasis is only on the message of pregnancy. Sometimes, adding the husband, or another child, if the couple has any, is a great way of highlighting a relationship or excitement in waiting for a new member of the family. Trying new ideas also result in creative and unique photos that the subject will love.
A Toronto children's photographer, meanwhile, needs a different approach to shooting portraits. Photographing children is one of the toughest assignments for a photographer to accomplish. Children usually move very fast, and it is difficult for them to stay still for long periods. There are several things that a photographer can do; however, that can make capturing snapshots of children a much easier task.
For a Toronto child photographer to successfully photograph children, he can use toys as a distraction or props. Children distracted with toys are usually good things to capture, since playing with toys is natural for children. Making them laugh or telling jokes works great, as well. Finally, using fast lenses enables one to use higher shutter speeds to freeze action, or flashes, to use slower shutter speeds and still get to photograph children.
